5G Mobile Technology - Changing our lives

5th Generation Mobile Technology

Wireless or Wire-more (as one cable manufacturing company markets itself), where are we heading. Are wireless truly wire-less gadgets or devices? Does wireless mean the last mile, which is without wires while everything else is still wired? If that is the case then are we truly wireless or does our future life become wireless.
Yes, our future will truly be wireless with practically everything getting wireless, which includes not just the devices using telecom services (radio waves), but others too like electricity will be wireless, internet will be wireless (not just from a wireless router), etc. All this is a possibility in near future but would we or say humans and other life forms be alive to experience them or would there be an evolution, which will result from adaptation. When I say adaptation, what I mean is that with all these wireless activities evolving or developing, there is a huge big mesh of radio waves, micro waves and all forms of waves enveloping our planet earth. These waves are harmful to our living cells, and in coming future these would pose as much more serious problem and health hazard than the current pollution of carbon, vehicular, plastics etc. We are heading towards harmful waves pollutionand what makes it even more challenging is that this wave pollution is invisible to our naked eyes, soundless to our ears, can’t be felt on our body, do not obstruct our movement, but yet these are much more powerful.
In this article I wish to talk about the much over hyped telecom or mobile technology, which is about to hit us, 5G or Fifth Generation of Wireless Telecom. About the rest, I shall cover in my next article, which would be on a much more broader aspect of how this technology is going to engulf us with seamlessly connecting all our digital footprints leading to bio-embedded technology. But for now, let’s look at 5G.
What is 5G for a common man; much faster mobile data network. Is that it, or there is more to 5G?
5G telecom / mobile technology is expected to be really fast and the network promises to take us in a new era of digital transformation powered by high-octane speed phones, enhanced virtual and augmented reality, the Internet of Things, and countless more technological wonders.
5G has been designed to feed our ever hungry and greed for seamless connectivity and speed. It will help meet the very large growth in data and connectivity of today’s modern world, the internet of things with billions of connected devices, and tomorrow’s innovations.
Initially, 5G will operate along with the existing 4G networks before evolving to fully standalone networks in subsequent updates and coverage expansions, which we shall see over the years. 5Gwilluse radio waves or radio frequency energy to transmit and receive voice and data connecting our communities.
In addition to delivering faster connections and greater capacity, a very important advantage of 5G is the fast response time referred to as latency.
Latency is the time taken for devices to respond to each other over the wireless network.  3G networks had a typical response time of 100 milliseconds, 4G is around 30 milliseconds and 5G will be as low as 1 millisecond.  This, in all practical purpose can be said as instantaneous, which opens up a whole new world of connected applications.
5G will enable instantaneous connectivity to billions of devices, the Internet of Things (IoT) and a truly connected world.
To further explain the use of 5G, there are three major categories:
1.   Machine to Machine communications – also called the Internet of Things (IoT) that involves connecting billions of devices without human intervention at a scale which we have never experienced before. This has the potential to revolutionise today’s industrial processes and applications including agriculture, manufacturing and business communications.

2.   Ultra-reliable low latency communications – This is an absolute mission critical application, which has a huge potential to revolutionise our current living. All those things which we saw in sci-fi movies and read about future life…becomes possible. This includes real-time control of devices, industrial robotics, vehicle to vehicle communications and safety systems, autonomous driving and safer transport networks. Low latency communications also opens up a whole new world where remote medical care, procedures, and treatments are all possible.

3.   Enhanced mobile broadband – providing super-fast data speeds with practically no connection drops and with much greater capacity, keeping all of us and our devices connected.  New applications may/will include fixed-wireless internet access for homes, outdoor broadcast applications without the need for broadcast vans, and greater seamless connectivity for people on the move.

For us, consumers/users, 5G will enable the connection of billions of devices for our smart living; smart cities, smart schools, smart homes, smart and safer vehicles, enhance health care and education, and provide a safer and more efficient place to live.
For businesses and industry, 5G and IoT will provide data worth in gold, diamond and platinum, allowing them to gain insights on us using their services and devices without us being aware. Their businesses will operate and will make accurate decisions about us, driven by this data; like innovate in farm produce, food items, retail, amanufacturing, FMCG, retail, all this being marketed to us, as paving way for cost savings, better customer experience and long-term growth.
Now let’s look at the newer technologies that have emerged in recent past and are becoming mainstream such as virtual and augmented reality, which will be accessible by everyone.  Virtual reality will provide connected experiences that were not possible before. With Virtual Reality on 5G, you will be able to travel to your favourite city, watch a live cricket match with the feeling of being at the ground, or even be able to inspect real estate and walk through a new home all from the comfort of your couch.
5G will pave the path for city-scale networks and city-scale spatial computing. Not just the Internet of Things (IoT) as it relates to our office or home environment but a city where devices and sensors and all sorts of things are connected.
So, welcome to the world of 5G, which is going to change our lives forever.

In my next article, I shall talk abut the harmful effects of 5G.
